The book of Judges recounts the turbulent period in Israel’s history between the death of Joshua and the rise of the monarchy, when Israel had no king and ‘everyone did what was right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25). It follows a recurring cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance as God raises up judges — military leaders and deliverers like Deborah, Gideon and Samson — to rescue the Israelites from their enemies. The book highlights both God’s faithfulness and the growing moral and spiritual decline of the people.
