Readings for the Day:
Jeremiah 15:15-21: Jeremiah speaks candidly to God about the suffering, isolation, and rejection he has experienced because of his prophetic calling. In response, God calls Jeremiah to return and remain faithful, promising to strengthen him like a fortified wall and to deliver him from those who oppose him.
Romans 12:9-21: Paul describes what genuine Christian love looks like in everyday life: honoring others, practicing hospitality, sharing in both joy and sorrow, living peaceably, and caring even for enemies. Rather than returning evil for evil, followers of Christ are called to overcome evil with good, entrusting judgment to God.
Matthew 16:21-28: After Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus explains that his mission will lead through suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection. Jesus then tells the disciples that following him involves taking up the cross, letting go of self-centered definitions of success, and discovering that true life is found in faithful discipleship.
Questions To Ponder:
1— When faithfulness becomes difficult or costly, where do you find the strength to continue trusting God? (Jeremiah 15:15-21)
2— What is one concrete way you can “overcome evil with good” in a difficult relationship or situation this week? (Romans 12:9-21)
3— What might “taking up your cross” look like in the ordinary choices and relationships of your life? (Matthew 16:21-28)
4—How do these texts speak to you today?
Prayer: You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised. You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Grant that we may believe in you, call upon you, know you, and serve you. Amen.
