December 7 Worship

Readings for the Day:
Isaiah 11:1-10: Isaiah describes the coming of a future, ideal ruler who will renew David’s royal live (the stump of Jesse).  Gifted by the spirit of God, this ruler will reign with perfect justice.  Enmity and danger will be restored to harmony and peaceful coexistence.
Romans 15:4-13:  God’s promise to include Gentiles within the circle of God’s blessed people has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ.  Christians live out their unity by welcoming and encouraging each other just as Christ has welcomed them into God’s family.
Matthew 3:1-12:  Just before Jesus begins his public ministry, John the Baptist appears, calling people to mend their ways and speaking of a powerful one who is to come

Questions To Ponder:
1— What is it like to imagine God’s kingdom as fragile or precious as a tiny shoot, a broken grass blade, or a sputtering flame? (Isaiah 11:1-10)
2—What does it mean to welcome one another just as Christ welcomed you? (Romans 15:4-13)
3—What is it like to consider your church as a wilderness in the midst of your wider community?  (Matthew 3:1-12)
4—How do these texts speak to you today?

Prayer:  Stir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son.  By his coming nurture our growth as people of repentance and peace.  Amen.
