October 11 Worship

Readings for the Day:
Isaiah 25:1-9:  Isaiah offers a song of praise to God, who overturns oppressive powers, provides refuge for the vulnerable, and prepares a rich feast “for all peoples.” The passage reaches its climax with the extraordinary promise that God will destroy death, wipe away tears, and bring salvation for which the people have long waited.

Philippians 4:1-9:  Paul encourages the Philippians to stand firm in the Lord, seek reconciliation, rejoice, and bring their worries to God through prayer. He then invites them to shape their lives by dwelling on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, and worthy of praise, trusting that the God of peace will be with them.

Matthew 22:1-14:  Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a royal wedding banquet whose original guests refuse the king’s invitation, leading the invitation to be extended broadly to others gathered from the streets. The parable emphasizes both the astonishing breadth of God’s invitation and the seriousness of responding to that invitation with a life transformed by grace.

Questions To Ponder:
1— Where do you most need to hear Isaiah’s promise that God will overcome death, wipe away tears, and bring new life? (Isaiah 25:1-9)
2— How might Paul’s invitation to prayer and to focus on what is true, honorable, just, and gracious change the way you respond to anxiety or conflict? (Philippians 4:1-9)
3— What does it mean not simply to receive God’s invitation, but to allow that invitation to change the way you live? (Matthew 22:1-14)
4—How do these texts speak to you today?

Prayer:  You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised.  You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.  Grant that we may believe in you, call upon you, know you, and serve you.  Amen.
